Client
Centretown Citizen Ottawa Corporation (Rimkus)
Project Type
We performed critical facade restoration work, focusing on targeted brick repairs and through-wall flashing upgrades along the East elevation of the building at 170 Booth St. The project involved replacing damaged brick units, removing masonry sections to allow for steel cleaning, adding protective coatings, and installing new self-adhered flashing membranes.
Project Challenges
This project posed a few unique challenges. With overhead power lines directly in the work zone, standard lifts and scaffolding were unsafe or impractical for the building’s layout. Ground-floor commercial tenants had to remain fully operational throughout construction, requiring continuous safe access and minimal disruption. Furthermore, the existing brickwork presented a sourcing challenge because the original bricks were no longer manufactured in standard sizes, making matching a key obstacle to maintaining facade consistency.

Solutions Implemented
GroupCMG developed and executed a tailored plan to address these complexities while staying on time and on budget:
Specialized Access Equipment
Specialized Access Equipment
- Deployed a compact, high-reach Atrium Lift (also known as a spider or compact crawler lift)
- The lift is capable of navigating tight spaces and safely working around power lines while reaching upper elevations.
Tenant & Public Safety Management
- Installed a custom overhead protection system with designated walkway access to maintain full business operations.
- Added site lighting, debris netting, and hoarding to ensure safety and comfort for tenants and visitors during active work.
Brick Matching Strategy
- Consulted multiple suppliers to source the closest texture and colour match.
- Procured larger-sized bricks and custom-cut each unit onsite to replicate the original dimensions, delivering a seamless appearance and quality result.
Results & Client Satisfaction
The restorations were executed efficiently, with the building now sporting renewed brickwork and an updated through-wall flashing system to protect against water infiltration. All work aligns with the consultant’s designs and intent, respecting budget targets while ensuring long-term performance and visual cohesion with the existing facade.
